Where, What, and How to Recycle

Shoals residents may take their recyclable materials to SSWA Recycling, regardless of the city in which they reside.  Collection bins for your home also can be purchased at SSWA headquarters in Tuscumbia.

Residents of Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia are encouraged to place recyclable materials out for curbside pick-up on their designated day. They can also take directly to the recycling center.

The following is a list of materials accepted by SSWA Recycling:

  • Cardboard – both corrugated and chipboard

    • (boxes for cereal, laundry detergents, foods, can drinks, etc.)

  • Paper – All paper is recyclable, even shredded

  • Steel – Cans for food (rinsed, please) and other types of metal, including tin

  • Aluminum – All aluminum is recyclable including cans, foil, gutters, lawn chairs, etc.

  • Plastic – Bottles and jugs with a #1 or #2 in the triangle on the bottom

    • Examples may include beverage bottles, shampoo containers, washing agents, etc.

  • Motor or Cooking Oil – Please leave it in a container curbside. No antifreeze or brake fluids.

  • Car Batteries

  • Pallets

  • Glass


Materials not accepted by SSWA Recycling:

  • Plastics other than the types listed above

    • (including food containers, dishes, wrapping plastics, shopping bags, etc.)

  • Hazardous Materials
